Logistics 2024 CASE / 02

Fleet scheduling for a 12-robot replenishment system

Twelve AMRs, one narrow-aisle warehouse and a WMS that could not be replaced. We made them agree.

The challenge

  • The existing WMS had no robot interface and could not be modified by the vendor.
  • Narrow aisles caused frequent deadlocks during peak replenishment windows.
  • Wi-Fi coverage had gaps that stopped the entire fleet instead of one robot.

What we built

  • An integration gateway between WMS and fleet manager, using the WMS's existing database views.
  • Zone-based traffic control with reservation and a deadlock-breaking priority rule.
  • Per-robot autonomy: a disconnected robot parks safely and rejoins without stopping the fleet.
  • Line-side call buttons and a simple status board for warehouse staff.

1,200+ replenishment tasks per day at peak
99.6% task completion after stabilisation

Scope of work

  • WMS integration gateway
  • Fleet scheduling and traffic rules
  • Network assessment and recovery design
  • On-site stabilisation and staff training
